What is Kintsugi (金継ぎ) ?
Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery.
The cracks are joined with lacquer and highlighted with gold or silver, turning the damage into a unique part of the object’s beauty.

Modern Kintsugi Workshop –

Discover the Beauty of Japan in Kyoto

Experience Modern Kintsugi in Kyoto – a contemporary version of the traditional Japanese art of pottery repair.
Instead of using natural lacquer, we use safe and easy-to-handle modern materials, making it accessible for everyone, even beginners.

In our hands-on workshop, you will repair pottery yourself while learning about the history of Kintsugi, its connection to the Japanese tea ceremony, and the philosophy of wabi-sabi – finding beauty in imperfection.
At the end you can take home your beautifully repaired piece, making it a meaningful souvenir of your time in Kyoto.

◆ Workshop Flow

  1. Brief introduction to the history of Kintsugi and the concept of wabi-sabi

  2. Choose the pottery piece to repair (prepared by us)

  3. Repair cracks or chips using the Modern Kintsugi method

  4. Finish the piece with gold leaf decoration

  5. Take home your beautifully repaired pottery 

★In the spirit of omotenashi, you will be served matcha and a Japanese sweet during the workshop.★

◆ Duration

About 2 hours

(please note it may vary by around 20 minutes depending on group size and the condition of the pottery)

◆ What to bring

・ All materials and tools are provided.

・ For your comfort, please wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, or bring an apron.

・ The workshop is suitable for participants aged 12 and above.

・ If you cancel at least 72 hours prior to your reservation time, you will be fully refunded.

・ Please arrive 10min early. 

・ Arrivals later than 10 minutes after the start time will be treated as a cancellation, and no refund will be issued.

・ We are not responsible to any allergic reaction or injuries during the workshop.
